Web-Based SNMP Agent

Home > Products > ASG-Sentry Agent

ASG-Sentry Agents are the most cost-effective, easiest way to add powerful SNMP functionality to your Win32®, UNIX®, and OS/2® systems, including support of your system's application layer.

ASG-Sentry Agent furnishes application layer monitoring and provides a framework for adapting SNMP to custom applications. Fully functional evaluation copies of ASG-Sentry Agent can be downloaded from this site.

  • Application Layer Monitor ASG-Sentry Agent is an SNMP agent that supports our System Application Management MIB. This allows SNMP monitoring of processes, memory, CPU, and disk resources. With ASG-Sentry Agent, you can extend SNMP to applications and operations management, leveraging the power of your existing SNMP management strategy to include program and server performance.

  • Web-Based System Portal In addition to furnishing SNMP service functions, ASG-Sentry Agent is also Web capable. You can configure and monitor SNMP groups (either standard groups or groups you define) via your Web browser. This greatly simplifies the setup of SNMP tables and other data items, and provides a powerful auxiliary interface to your management data.

  • Extensible Framework ASG-Sentry Agent is an extensible framework for creating SNMP agent processes and related Web pages. Using ASG-Sentry Agent, you monitor the health and status of a platform using both SNMP and your Web browser. ASG-Sentry Agent is an open system, built with fully commented CGI scripts. It also incorporates an extensive C-language call library for creating SNMP agent functionality or stand-alone SNMP agents.

ASG-Sentry Agent provides a ready-to-run implementation of SNMP that enables you to monitor your processes, disks, memory, and CPU via third-party network managers or any Web browser. Additionally, ASG-Sentry Agent furnishes an easily scaled framework that lets you add new SNMP management functions as you need them.

Platform Administration Tools

As a starting point, ASG-Sentry Agent provides a set of Web-based tools that allow you to inspect the process information, disk space, memory, CPU, and file system of the managed platform via a Web browser. These platform administration tools provide you with in-depth visibility of your platform from any desktop, so you can browse or examine the detailed performance characteristics of a remote machine.

By themselves, these tools offer valuable assistance in the remote administration of the managed server. For example, you can inspect the loading characteristics of a machine over time, examine configuration files and directories, or view processes and services on the host platform to determine the current usage of the machine. This is especially useful in a mixed operating system environment, since ASG-Sentry Web screens are consistent between Windows and UNIX platforms.

By using these platform administration tools, you can remotely troubleshoot many problems without leaving your office.

SNMP Agent Functions

In addition to various Web-based platform administration tools, ASG-Sentry Agent is a high-compliance SNMP agent that allows you to monitor the various performance characteristics of your machine via standard network managers. For example, working in conjunction with our ASG-Sentry Network Manager (or other third-party SNMP manager), you can set alarms on performance thresholds, such as whether a process (or process group) is using too much CPU or memory or whether key processes are no longer running on your platform. Additionally, by using the Web interface, you can configure traps to be issued to a network manager. Or, you can simply browse the ASG-Sentry Agent MIB and gather pertinent information regarding the managed platform's application layer.

Extensible Framework

ASG-Sentry Agent is an extensible framework which is scalable in three different ways:
  • Plug-in MIB Extensions The easiest way to use ASG-Sentry Agent is to simply plug-in one of our modules. We furnish a variety of ready-to-run plug-ins that provide special functions such as MIB 2 functionality, application MIBs, and site-specific MIBs. These plug-ins are easily installed (requiring no programming experience), and can be used in conjunction with other extensibility techniques mentioned herein.

  • User Level MIB Extensions With no modifications to the agent, you can use the extensible agent to post SNMP values originating from an application program. This provides a simple and straightforward method of making SNMP data available to third-party network management platforms. For example, you can easily script a means of recording the number of errors in a log file, so that this value can be tied to a network manager alarm. Or, you can write a script that runs a backup procedure and posts a completion value when finished so that a network manager can be aware of the success or failure of the backup process.

  • C-Language MIB Extensions C-language programmers can modify or extend ASG-Sentry Agent by developing their own "plug-ins" to support Get, Get-Next, Set, and Trap messages. ASG-Sentry Agent comes with a powerful SNMP ExAgent Development Kit, API, and tutorial information that greatly simplifies development of site-specific SNMP agents.
